QUESTION: Hi
Kathy. My name is
Susan. I’ve been
having some problems
at work, and they
seem to be the same
types of problems I
had in my last job,
but in a completely
different field. The
problems are around
my boss…I seemed to
always end up with a
supervisor who is
impossible to work
for, who doesn’t
respect me, and who
doesn’t know how to
oversee me or my
projects without
completely
micromanaging and
criticizing. Any
helpful advice?
ANSWER: Hi
Susan. Thanks for
writing. The problem
you mention is
unfortunately all
too common, with so
many folks today in
managerial positions
of authority who
haven’t had the
advantage of being
properly trained and
educated in what is
required to fulfill
the role of an
empowering manager
or leader.
What stands out for
me in your question,
however, is that you
mentioned you’ve
experienced this
before, perhaps over
and over in your
career? That points
to what I might call
a “negative pattern”
that may be
revealing itself. If
you’ve had this
before, I might ask
a few questions to
get you thinking
about what this
situation is
representing on a
deeper level:
 |
Have you had
chronic lack of
support and
respect by your
bosses? |
 |
Have you
found that your
superiors treat
you in a way
that undermines
your progress
and growth? |
 |
If so, what
might the
situation be
telling you
about how
well-suited you
are to this line
of work? Do you
like your work?
Does it excite
you, energize
you? Is it your
passion? |
 |
If not,
perhaps you are
experiencing
continuing
difficult
relationships
with your bosses
because you are
being called to
re-evaluate your
career path, and
perhaps consider
choosing a new
direction. |
Think about the
patterns in your
life…what seems to
be repeating itself
over and over?
Consider that it’s
time for a change,
and take proactive
steps to bring about
the change you most
long for. |
