Go on – Take the Leap!

Hello! Here we are in mid-August already! It’s flown by a bit too fast for me – and for you too?
Today I’d like to share a recent revelation I had about women and business, and the new direction it’s led me to pursue.
This past year, as I’ve conducted career and executive coaching sessions and spoken to groups of women who long to enhance their careers, I’ve noticed a trend in women around a deep reluctance to self-promote. Women more than men it seems, are shy to communicate what they’re great at and resist shouting from the rooftops in celebration of their talents and gifts.
A recent article in ForbesWoman — The Four Myths of Self-Promotion by Kelly Watson — sums it up perfectly. In believing these four limiting myths, women hold themselves back from effective communication and marketing:
The Bitch Myth–”Self promotion will make me look arrogant.”
The Princess Myth–”If I’m good enough, people will hear about it.”
The Friends and Family Myth–”Others should talk about my accomplishments, not me.”
The Martyr Myth–”You can’t control what people think anyway.”
Each of these myths – or misguided beliefs — keep us from moving forward to abundant success — financial and otherwise.
I’ve been deeply engaged in marketing my entire professional life – first, as a Marketing Director and VP in the corporate world, and then, in my small business. When I started Ellia in 2003, I assumed that, as an entrepreneur, marketing my services would come very easy to me. But then I faced the reality – It’s one thing to market someone else’s products and services; it’s entirely another to promote yourself!
Thankfully, after a good deal of inner and outer work, I’ve overcome my squeamishness about communicating what I’m good at and allowing my influence to expand. Now I’m committed to helping other women do the same (once again, I’m turning my “mess into a message!”).

To me, it’s a spiritual pursuit and a hero’s journey to find the courage to be all you wish to be in this world. Hiding your brilliance serves no one and wastes precious time.

So that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us;
It’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we’re liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.
