Mother's Day is a time of honoring and appreciating our mothers and what they have done and given for us.  This week, I wonder too if each of us could take time to recognize with appreciation how we have mothered (and fathered) our own lives; how we have nurtured, cared for and fearlessly brought into being our own selves, in the face of very challenging circumstances.

So often we focus on what isn't going well, or how we are flawed as individuals, but we rarely hug ourselves and say "Job well done!"  When we do allow in some praise, it's usually because others have given us recognition for something outward we've done. 

I'd like to reverse this pattern, and encourage us all to start a new process this week by appreciating the courage we've had in bringing ourselves forward during these troubling times. 

I'd like us to say to ourselves:

"I am a loving and nurturing mother/father to myself and others.  I always do the best I can.  I am aware of my gaps and dedicate myself to my continued growth.  I am growing in my strength and self-acceptance each day."

This is a great start, I think, to being on the continual path of appreciating the very essence of courage and strength that you are.  We came to this lifetime with some stretching to do, and we're doing it!  But try as we might, there are times we slip up.  Don't beat yourself up about it.  Shine the light on what you want to change in your behaviors and life, and do it. 

As a coach in these trying times, I spend a great deal of time with people in major transition, and I'm always amazed at the rapid (often miraculous) growth they experience when in relationship with another who loves, believes in, and empathizes with them.  We've been so conditioned to doubt ourselves and question our abilities, motives and beliefs, and this self-doubt can be demoralizing and paralyzing. 

The most powerful approach I know in helping people overcome crisis is facilitating their ability to gain an unshakable belief in themselves, to trust their instincts, and to know that they have a right to (and an essential purpose in) following their own unique path -- fearlessly and authentically -- despite the objections and fears of others around them.

Let's take this Mother's Day as an opportunity to cherish and appreciate not only our mothers whom we love dearly, but also ourselves, for being courageous and strong during very tough times, and for attempting to be a steady source of hope and light for others.

To everyone who is reading this...thank you for the positive energy and love you've given yourself and others.  All who've experienced you are grateful.
